Presentation of the Centre
The Institute in Advanced Technologies and Care Models in Oncology of Reggio Emilia, embedded in the Local Health Authority of Reggio Emilia, has been recognized by the Ministry of Health since 2011 as one of the National Research Cancer Hospitals.
The Institute is committed to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of oncological patients.
The multidisciplinary approach is the main driver for improving the quality of healthcare.
Main Research Activities
The Institute develops research activities of international standing in the field of oncology and onco-hematology, throughout the whole patient's pathway: from screening to diagnostics, from research on drugs and innovative treatments to research on supportive and end-of-life therapies. The Institute relies on the contribution of approximately 200 researchers, in particular doctors, biologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals who combine research activity with clinical practice. More than 50 are young, full-time researchers: they are mostly biologists, who develop molecular research on different types of tumors, in particular breast, lung, colon, thyroid, lymphomas, mesothelioma, melanoma, etc. Other researchers are engaged in oncological rehabilitation, psychological support for patients and families, and palliative care.
Core Facilities
Care activities are guaranteed by the Oncology and Advanced Technologies Department and by the provincial Oncology Network. Most of the disciplines and professionals involved in the oncology patient pathway are concentrated in the CORE – Oncology and Hematology Centre of Reggio Emilia, a 16,000 square meters pavilion that includes 125 of the Institute's 190 total beds.
Education
In recent years, innovative educational paths have been developed on oncological medicine, palliative care, physician-patient communication, ethics and methodology in research, healthcare management.
The Institute also promotes the training of new researchers and their integration into the research and clinical facilities through the doctoral program.
