Presentation of the Centre
Tartu University Hospital (founded in May 1804) and the Medical Faculty of the
University of Tartu (founded in 1632) are the two important parts of the Centre.
Tartu University Hospital is the largest health care provider in Estonia. High quality
tertiary medical care is offered in nearly all specialties. At the same time Tartu
University Hospital is the only institution to perform organ transplantations in Estonia.
Kidney, liver, pancreas and lungs are harvested by University Hospital’s transplant
surgeons' team all over the country. Likewise, pediatric patients with congenital heart
diseases are referred to Tartu University Hospital and the Genetics and Personalized
Medicine Clinic serves the whole Estonian population.
The Cancer Centre of Tartu University Hospital governs and oversees the cancer care
continuum across different structural units encompassing prevention, diagnostics,
treatment, rehabilitation, palliative care, end-of-life care, teaching and research. The
Cancer Centre is the only OECI accredited clinical Cancer Centre in Estonia. All clinics
and medical services related to the diagnostics and treatment of malignant tumors at
the Hospital and the Medical Faculty are involved in the activities of the Cancer Centre.
Main research activities
Tartu University Hospital integrates work with scientific research. Education and
research are undertaken in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine. Both
Faculty and University Hospital are widely known for clinical trials and clinical research
in human health. In addition, the tight co-operation between the University and the
University Hospital creates mutual synergy between preclinical and clinical research.
Research activities are connected with the following issues: implementation of
therapies and precision oncology; new opportunities of radio- and chemotherapy in
glioblastoma multiforme; systemic approach in multiple myeloma; the role of leukemic
stem cells in acute and chronic leukemia; hemopoetic stem cells - opportunities to

Core Facilities
Tartu University Hospital serves as a clinical base for oncology and haematology. Main
activities take place in the Haematology and Oncology Clinic, but also Surgery Clinic,
Radiology Clinic, Pathology Department, Genetics and Personalized Medicine Clinic,
Lung Clinic, Women’s Clinic, Neurology Clinic, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation
Clinic, Palliative Care Department, Patient Service etc.
Education
Tartu University Hospital is the only academic hospital in Estonia. It plays a major role
in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies of medical fields. As the leading
teaching hospital all the staff is trained to supervise students and residents from the
Faculty of Medicine but also nursing students and colleagues from other hospitals.
