Presentation of the Centre
Established in 1995, the Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute (NKBCI) at the American University of Beirut Medical Center provides comprehensive cancer treatment and nursing care for adults. The institute has established a research network that includes basic, translational, clinical, and population-based research serving Lebanon and the MENA Region. With multiple health care accreditations: Joint Commission International, MAGNET designations for Nursing services, CAP accreditation for our Pathology and Laboratory services, JACIE accreditation for our Bone Marrow Transplant Program, and ACGME-I attesting to its superior standards in patient-centered care, nursing, pathology/laboratory services and graduate medical education.
Clinical Research
Clinical research dates to 1971-72, where the main research activities were in thalassemia, leukemia, Breast and GI cancers. NKBCI now includes 14 full time Hematology-Oncology attendings and 4 radiation oncologists, with sub-specialties in specific cancers and over 100 publications annually. Extensive collaboration exists with other clinical departments and basic science researchers in addition to regional and international renowned institutes.
Education
NKBCI physicians are involved in training residents and fellows through a 4-year residency program at the Department of Radiation Oncology as well as the 2-year residency program in Medical Physics and the 3-year fellowship program at the Division of Hematology Oncology at AUBMC to graduate specialists to serve in the region. The institute also hosts several annual scientific activities and workshops for the public.
