Presentation of the Centre
QSUNT (Qendra Spitalore Universitare “Nënë Tereza”) is Albania’s largest hospital and its only tertiary academic medical centre. The hospitals were grouped into a single campus in 1993 forming the University Hospital Centre of Tirana (QSUT) and renamed in 1997 in honour of Mother Teresa. It stands on a campus in north-east Tirana and is the national referral hospital for complex care, teaching, and specialist services. The centre provides outpatient care for about 300,000 people a year, inpatient care for more than 80,000, and emergency care for more than 260,000. It has a capacity of about 1,450 beds and treats roughly 400 inpatients a day.
Main Research Activities
QSUNT is actively engaged in clinical research and academic activities, positioning itself as a central hub for scientific studies and collaboration. The hospital’s Science Department plays a crucial role in supporting and ensuring compliance with clinical research projects.
Core Facilities
QSUNT comprises several clinical centres where cancer patients are treated, thus providing a comprehensive array of services, including oncological surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and haematology, diagnostic radiology and pathology, pharmacy, rehabilitation, and palliative care.
Education
As Albania’s only tertiary academic medical centre, QSUNT is the main teaching hospital for the University of Medicine of Tirana. It trains medical students, residents, and specialists through clinical placements, bedside teaching, and supervised practice across its services. Education is closely linked to care and research. Staff take part in continuing professional development, multidisciplinary training, and joint programs with European partners.
